Overview
The S-250-48 is a switch-mode power supply taking 220 V AC and delivering 48 V DC at up to 5 A, 250 W - the same power as the S-250-24, wound for a higher-voltage, lower-current output instead.
48 V reaches further into most stepper drive input ranges than 24 V does (the Tstep-087 and DW870-DC both run up to 80 V), which keeps torque up further into the speed range on the same motor, since a stepper's usable torque falls away as step rate rises and winding inductance limits how fast current can be re-established. 5 A covers the running current of a drive or two at this voltage, but a stepper drive's current draw spikes during acceleration - size the supply to the peak, not the average.
It also holds less bulk capacitance than a linear supply built around a transformer, which matters for absorbing a drive's regenerative current on deceleration; where that's a concern, the TLP-04/TLP-05 rectifier-and-filter cards build a linear supply instead.
