Overview

The TM26D Close is a tool setting gauge - a touch probe mounted on the machine bed that the tool tip touches to set Z zero or measure tool length automatically, rather than doing it by eye with a piece of paper or a manual jog.

Its contact is normally closed: the circuit reads closed at rest and opens the instant the tool touches the plate. A normally-closed contact is the more common choice for a safety-relevant sensing input like this, because a cut or disconnected cable then reads as a fault (circuit open) rather than silently reading as "not triggered" the way a normally-open contact's rest state would.

The cable is 2 metres with 4 wires, suiting a controller and mounting position that don't need a longer run.

For a normally-open version with a longer cable, the TM26D Normally Open in this range runs 5 metres with 6 wires instead - check which contact type your controller's tool-setting input expects before choosing between them.

Questions

Is this a limit switch, or something else?

Something else — it's a tool setting gauge, a touch probe mounted on the machine bed that the tool tip touches to set Z zero or measure tool length automatically, instead of doing it by eye.

Why normally-closed rather than normally-open — does the choice actually matter?

It does for safety. A normally-closed contact reads closed at rest and opens the instant the tool touches the plate, so a cut or disconnected cable shows up as a fault (circuit open) rather than silently reading as "not triggered" the way a normally-open contact's rest state would.

What cable length and wire count does it have?

2 meters, 4 wires.

How do I know if this is the right one for my controller, versus the other TM26D listing?

Check which contact type your controller's tool-setting input expects — this one is normally-closed with a 2 m/4-wire cable; the TM26D Normally Open in this range is the other contact type, with a longer 5 m/6-wire cable.
